Room 420: Sunday evening

Isabel and Jack returned to the dorms only when the approaching night made it too difficult to continue their search. They'd started in the dorms, moved on to town and when he wasn't found there had moved on to the preserve.

Cold and tired, Isabel opened the door to Cedric's room and pulled Jack in behind her.

[ooc: locked to Jack and Isabel, please, and Cedric's room and pink lizard fish thing modded with permission!]

"No. If he got turned into an animal, he'd have found me." Jack could speak from experience. Even as a fox he'd recognised Cedric, had sought him out. "If he's in the locker I'm going in after him," he said firmly, gaze wandering back to Isabel. "But there's another possibility." One he didn't really want to think about.

"No you're not," Isabel said firmly. "There's no guarantee you'd wind up where he is. And it hasn't eaten anyone permanently in a long time. We just need to wait for him to come out." She walked over and slipped her arms around his waist, offering what comfort she could. "What other possibility?"

Because he was so good at waiting for things. He was already itching with impatience to do something. "When he was sent here," Jack wrapped his arms around her, cheek resting against her hair, "he hardly had time to pack. He had no time to say goodbye. Maybe they decided to take him back."

"Maybe," she nodded, fearing that very possibility herself. "But before we go borrowing trouble, let's make sure he's not turned into an ant or something."

"Cedric wouldn't be an ant. He'd be a," a smile slid across Jack's face as he pictured Cedric, "a hawk, or a falcon. Never an ant." It was pure distraction, and he leaned into her for a minute. "So, first thing we do, find out if he's supposed to be gone, second, find out if the cameras caught something. After that we figure out how to find him."

Not that his bad feeling was making him unduly pessimistic, he'd just learned from long experience to expect the worst and plan accordingly.

"Sam's rubbing off on you," Isabel said, rubbing a soothing hand down his back. "That's a good plan."

"I was supposed to be teaching her impulsiveness, she ended up turning me into a planner. Life is strange." Jack sighed and tightened his arms for a moment. "There's nothing we can do right now, is there."

It wasn't really a question. "And he might show up on his own." But he was remembering the other times Cedric couldn't be found, when he'd nearly been eviscerated, when he'd been attacked by trolls.

"No, there's not. This is the worst part," Isabel said. "The waiting." She's done it often enough when Michael's gone off on some quest, or when Max was in trouble.

Jack nodded in heartfelt agreement and walked over to dangle his fingers in Puff's tank. The little axylotl swam to the surface and nibbled his fingers, making him smile.

"Okay. I'm gonna take Puff, just in case, and go let Sam know we're currently down one wizard. Tomorrow we'll see the principal and go from there. Until then we just have to wait."

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2006-12-10 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"You do that. I'm sure she'd want to know," Isabel nodded, hoping that Sam would be able to distract him just a little bit. "Come get me in the morning and we'll go see Principal Washburn. Hopefully she'll have answers."

Jack gathered the tank in his arms, ooffing a little in surprise at the weight and suddenly very glad pink lizard fish things didn't actually need a full tank of water.

Stepping carefully so he wouldn't disturb Puff, he walked over to stand next to Isabel. "Thanks, Isabel," he said, and leaned forward to kiss her cheek. "I'll see you in the morning."

"Careful there," Isabel said, squeezing his arm. "Don't drop the brain eating fish." She opened the door for him, then carefully shut it and locked it behind them. "He's going to be okay," she promised one last time before heading down the hall to her room.

"He doesn't eat brains," he called after Isabel. "Do you," he said to Puff. "Don't listen to her. Well, do, because she's right about Cedric. But not the rest. Come on." Hefting the tank higher, he started the trip down to the second floor. "You can meet you Auntie Sam."
