Keeping in mind what she'd been told at the library, Isabel kept a wary eye out on the way back to Ronan's house.

She didn't notice anyone suspicious and maybe she was just being paranoid, but it seemed like the streets were a little emptier then normal.

Relieved to finally be back in familiar surroundings, Isabel poked around the kitchen and tried to figure out what to make for dinner.

"Do you need help with anything?" Jack asked, coming in from a handwavey day at the law office.

He'd found nothing, but Ms. Cabot's files were a bit clearer. His nerves, though, were still ajangle. Something had felt wrong all day.

Isabel jumped and turned from where she'd been chopping vegetables, her hand instinctively raising in defense.

It just as quickly dropped when she recognized Jack. "Sorry, I'm just on edge," she apologized. "Would you mind setting the table? I don't know who's going to want to eat, but there's enough for everyone."

"I can manage that," Jack said, as easily as he could. "I didn't mean to startle you."

He went to get the silverware out. "Is anything new wrong, or is it just -- the usual?"

"Is it sad that I almost wish it was the usual?" Isabel said, setting aside the knife she'd been using to chop vegetables and focusing on Jack. "I was at the library today and one of the girls told me about something that happened to her in the Perk."

"I think the sad thing is that there is a usual," Jack decided. Humans were adaptable; they'd get used to this, as they got used to every other bloody thing. "What's wrong at the Perk now?"

"It's Fandom. There's always a usual." Fortunately most of the time it wasn't quite so end of the worldy.

"When she got there, the store was completely empty, not an employee or customer in sight." Isabel gestured towards the window and the darkness outside. "With all the weirdness going on, people are living on caffeine. They should be working double shifts. Then the creepy people came in. The ones that were fascinated by something so primitive as a written note."

"Aliens?" Jack wondered, not realizing how close to home that might hit. "People from the distant future?"

He thought about it for a moment.

"I've never seen the Perk empty."

"I'm willing to put money on it being some sort of higher intelligence," she nodded. "Be it the relatives come calling or some other bit of weirdness. The trick is figuring out how to beat it."

Isabel had drawn the same conclusion herself about the Perk. "Yeah, I know. And was it just me or did the streets seem even quieter then normal tonight?"

"Figure out their technology and take it away?" Jack suggested, off-handedly. He was trying to think about her question.

"Much quieter. I thought people were staying in because of everything going on."

Wyatt had spent much of the day pouring through the Book of Shadows (again), and now wandered into the kitchen. "Hey," he said softly.

"I like that idea. Hopefully it'll also involve hitting things and possibly tossing people through walls." Her whole family had been taken away from her. Isabel had issues that needed to be worked out.

She shuddered, turning back to the chopping board. "I guess people could be staying in, but it just seemed more deserted."

Because she'd been half listening for footsteps, Isabel didn't jump too badly. "Hey yourself," she smiled once she realized who it was. "How are you doing?"

He shrugged tiredly. "Still nothing in the Book," he said. "Any luck in the library?"

Jack smiled. "I don't care what we have to do, as long as we can get back what they took."

"A group went into Special Collections. Maybe they'll find something." Because he looked like he could use it, Isabel made her way over and slid her arms around Wyatt's waist. "I'm making dinner."

"My family, your vampire. Our worlds." For the first time Isabel considered the time of year. "It'd be one hell of a Christmas present."

Wyatt hugged her back, tightly, as if to reassure himself she was still there. "I just wish there was someone we could fight," he murmured.

"And I'm Jewish," Jack contributed. "But I think I can say without reservation that it would be the best one I ever got."

"A happy Hanukkah present then," she corrected herself. "Definitely the best one ever."

"But first we deal with the creepy people." Yes, back to reality. "I think it might be wise for the time being if no one goes out alone."

Parker was out of sorts, frowning, and in need of company; so she figured stopping by Ronan's was in order before she went back to the hotel.

"Hey. So. Special Collections is still as weird as ever." Parker's nose twitched. "Did you cook?"

She knew that feeling all too well. Which was Isabel was hesitant to tell him what she'd learned in the library today.

But it was probably better if Wyatt heard it from her.

"There might be."

She'd better not regret this.

"There's pasta on the stove. Grab yourself a plate."

Isabel took a seat at the table and waited for Parker. "Did you find anything?"

"No," Parker said somewhat gloomily, grabbing a plate. "Unless you count huge party beasts who wanted us to mosh with them."

"It could have been worse, they could have wanted to eat you." It was Special Collections. It was totally a possibility.

"True. As it was, it was like Burning Man. Only with natural fur." Parker served herself a plate full, and then opened the fridge to get a drink. "Also, there's a Wyndham-Pryce here who's just as uptight as the last one, if you remember that guy. Step on one priceless antique...."
